Abstract:
'Wie Menschen Bilder wahrnehmen und verstehen ist Gegenstand der Bildrezeptionsforschung. Um Bildrezeptionsprozesse jenseits des Leitparadigmas der Sprache zu analysieren, diskutiert der Beitrag zunächst die Besonderheiten von Bildern in Abgrenzung vom Zeichensystem der Sprache und sodann von der Wirklichkeitswahrnehmung. Als 'herausgegriffene Zitate von Erscheinungen' müssen Bilder, insbesondere Fotografien, durch die Rezipierenden re-kontextualisiert werden, um verstanden zu werden. Der Prozess der Bildrezeption wird dabei als wesentlich präreflexives Handeln aufgefasst, das sich nicht in der Subsumtion von Bildern unter das Begriffsraster der Sprache erschöpft. Handlungstheoretisch lässt sich diese Auffassung unter Bezug auf Bourdieus Habitustheorie konzeptualisieren. Damit wird zugleich der Sozialität des Sehens Rechnung getragen, indem Sinnbildungen zum einen als kollektive, zum andern auch als milieuspezifische Prozesse betrachtet werden. Die methodologischen und methodischen Konsequenzen, die sich daraus ergeben, werden mit Hilfe einer besonderen Art des Gruppendiskussionsverfahrens und der Dokumentarischen Methode nach Ralf Bohnsack eingelöst. Anhand der exemplarischen Rekonstruktion von Sinnbildungsprozessen, zu denen es bei der Rezeption eines Fotos kommt, wird das Verfahren illustriert.' (Autorenreferat) ; 'Picture reception research examines how people perceive and understand pictures. In order to analyse the processes of picture reception beyond the dominant paradigm of verbal language this paper firstly compares the characteristics of pictures with verbal sign systems and then with the perception of reality. Pictures, especially photographs, have to be re-contextualized by their recipients to be understood since they are 'selected visual quotations'. The processes of picture reception are regarded as pre-reflexive actions exceeding the mere subsumption of pictures under the pattern of explicit linguistic terms. As to the theory of action, this notion can be conceptualized by applying Bourdieu's concept of the habitus. This also accounts for the sociality of viewing, since the construction of meanings is considered to be collective on the one hand, but also specific to social milieus on the other. The methodological and methodical consequences thereof can be met by applying a specific group discussion technique and the Documentary Method according to Ralf Bohnsack. This is illustrated by an exemplary reconstruction of the different perception and interpretation patterns involved in the reception of a photograph.' (author's abstract)
